A Look at the History of The National Domestic Violence Hotline

With all the celebration around the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, we have the chance to look back on the history of The Hotline, which was able to take its first call because of this very legislation. Here are some of our most important dates throughout the past 20 years:

  • September 13, 1994: President Clinton signs VAWA, which authorizes the creation of the National Domestic Violence Hotline.
  • August 17, 1995: The Texas Council on Family Violence receives a $1 million grant that establishes The Hotline.
  • February 21, 1996: The Hotline takes its first call.
  • October 28, 2000: President Clinton signs the reauthorization of VAWA, supporting The Hotline.
  • August 2, 2003: The Hotline takes its one-millionth call. The caller is a battered woman looking for shelter. After speaking to a local crisis line and learning that shelters are full, she remembers the number of The Hotline, calls, and an advocate helps her find a place to stay.
  • October 2005: The Hotline concludes its Connections Campaign and raises $2.7 million to build the technological capacity of The Hotline to respond to more calls and provide better service.
  • September 26, 2006: Verizon Wireless offers direct connection to The Hotline through the #HOPE Initiative — dialing #HOPE from any Verizon Wireless phone instantly connects callers to The Hotline.
  • February 27, 2006: Senator Biden leads a press conference at The Hotline to mark its 10th anniversary. He meets with advocates to talk about the technological improvements designed to help advocates respond to callers more quickly.
  • February 2006: The Hotline reaches the milestone of answering over 1.5 million calls.
  • February 8, 2007: The Hotline and Liz Claiborne Inc. announce the launch of loveisrespect.org, the National Teen Dating Abuse Helpline (NDAH). Today, this is referred to as the National Dating Abuse Helpline (NDAH).
  • October 21, 2008: The Hotline takes its 2 millionth call.
  • April 28, 2009: Vice President Joe Biden makes a visit to the National Domestic Violence Hotline and loveisrespect for a press event and tour of the facilities. This is his second visit to the organizations in six years.
  • October 13, 2009: The partnership between Marshalls and The Hotline for the Shop ‘til It Stops campaign officially launches with two fundraising and awareness events in Los Angeles and New York.
  • November 22, 2010: The Hotline ranks in the ‘Top 10 Best Places to Work’ in a report conducted by the Austin American Statesman and Workplace Dynamics. The Hotline is the only social services nonprofit ranked in the top 10 winners.
  • January 27, 2011: The leader of the NFL, Commissioner Roger Goodell, joins The Hotline to help bring awareness to domestic violence and to celebrate the 15th Anniversary. He joins Dallas Cowboys superstar Jason Witten, baseball great Joe Torre and others to kick off the yearlong campaign.
  • February 8, 2011: The National Dating Abuse Helpline joins forces with Break the Cycle to expand upon loveisrespect.org. This partnership creates the ultimate comprehensive online resource to engage and empower teens through dating abuse awareness.
  • September 26, 2011: loveisrespect announces the nation’s first dating abuse texting service. Vice President Joe Biden premieres the service by sending the first text to National Dating Abuse Helpline peer advocate Whitney Laas.
  • February 21, 2012: The Hotline celebrates its 16th anniversary. At this point, The Hotline currently has about 85 staff members, both paid and volunteer. Of those employees, 12 have been at The Hotline for over 10 years.
  • January 29, 2013: At a special congressional briefing, The Hotline announces they are expecting to reach a milestone nearly one year earlier than predicted — answering 3 million calls since its inception in 1996. While this is not a cause for celebration, it highlights the vital role that The Hotline continues to play in assisting victims of domestic violence.
  • March 7, 2013: President Obama reauthorizes the Violence Against Women Act, with provisions that extend the protection of Native American women and members of the LGBTQ community.
  • March 8, 2013: The Hotline is the only center in the nation that has access to service providers and shelters across the U.S. Today, The Hotline continues to grow and explore new avenues of service.

This October, you can help end domestic violence by simply purchasing a pair of shoes at any Marshalls store nationwide between October 8-22, 2011.

For each pair of shoes sold during this period, $1 (up to $150,000) will be donated to the National Domestic Violence Hotline.  For the past 20 years, Marshalls has worked to put an end to domestic violence through their Shop Til It Stops program. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and across the country family violence programs, shelters, community groups, law enforcement, students and many more are planning events to help bring awareness to this devastating issue affecting millions of Americans.

Texas Stars

The Texas Stars have teamed up with The Hotline, and has declared Friday, October 14th “Domestic Violence Awareness Night” at the game. A percentage of proceeds from the ticket sales using the “GoStars” promo code will be donated to The Hotline to help increase awareness about domestic violence.

If you live out of the area and can’t attend the game, you can still support The Hotline by purchasing a ticket and donating it to The Hotline. Unity Days

On October 4, 2011, the domestic violence community will join together to take part in the 2011 National Call of Unity.  On this free, 45 minute national call, we’ll hear from survivors, advocates, national experts, and government officials working to end domestic and sexual violence.  Together, we’ll share in a collective moment of silence for all the women, children, and men who have lost their lives to intimate partner violence and we’ll hear a dramatic recitation from nationally renowned spoken word artists Sunni Patterson and Asia Rainey.

Mary Kay

Shop till it Stops Benefits the Hotline

Did you know buying a pair of shoes can help benefit the Hotline? For every pair of shoes sold at Marshall’s stores from October 1 -15, 2010, the company will donate $1 to the Hotline (up to $150,000).

For almost two decades, Marshalls has supported the prevention and awareness of domestic violence and for the second year in a row, Marshall’s has supported the Hotline in our life-saving efforts and we are proud to stand with them and take a stand against domestic violence.

This year, in addition to the in-store program Marshalls will also be taking its symbolic exhibit to different parts of the country to further encourage people to join us and take a stand against domestic violence. You can see the exhibit at this year’s Savor the Season event on October 10, 2010 in Los Angeles and in East Harlem, NY on October 15th.

Inspirational Events

141During Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM), many organizations are showing their support by hosting events in honor of victims of domestic violence. This month has been filled with inspirational events and exhibits, buildings illuminated in purple light for awareness, and many fundraising initiatives for victims and survivors. With so many wonderful things planned for this important month, it is hard not to feel inspired. The month is not over yet and there is still plenty of time to do your part locally. The following three events have stood out the most for us, and we hope they inspire you as well.

Empire State Building Tower Lighting

Many buildings across the country have been glowing purple this month in honor of DVAM but one structure definitely stood out. The Empire State Building, one of the most impressive structures in the world, was highlighted in purple exterior lighting in honor of DVAM and the New York State Coalition Against Domestic Violence on October 14.

Marshalls Shop ’til It Stops Symbolic Exhibit

On October 1, Marshalls and the National Domestic Violence Hotline (The Hotline) joined forces for an awareness and fundraising campaign as a launch to Domestic Violence Awareness Month.This year, The Hotline was the beneficiary of the Marshalls annual Shop ’til It Stops in-store program which donates $1.00 to the Hotline for each pair of shoes sold at Marshalls between October 1 through October 15.

The program was launched by Laura Leighton and Tim Gunn with the unveiling of a symbolic exhibit created by Marshalls that honored those who take a stand against domestic violence each day. The structure featured facts about domestic violence and inspirational messages from celebrities and was open for consumer experience in Los Angeles and New York at the beginning of the month. The Clothesline Project

The Clothesline Project is a program started in 1990 to address the issue of violence against women. It provides women affected by violence an opportunity to express their emotions by decorating a shirt. The shirts are then hung on a clothesline to be viewed by the public as a testimony to the problem of violence against women. The Verizon Foundation had a display of the Clothesline Project at their National Domestic Violence Prevention Summit 2009 Engaging Communities to Help End Domestic Violence which was held in Dallas, TX on September 24, 2009.

Symbolic Exhibit Launches Partnership between Marshalls and the National Domestic Violence Hotline

timgunnThe partnership between Marshalls and the National Domestic Violence Hotline (The Hotline) for the Shop ‘til It Stops Campaign has officially launched with two fundraising and awareness events in Los Angeles and New York. The first event in Los Angeles on October 1, kicked off Domestic Violence Awareness month and featured celebrity guests such as Project Runway’s Tim Gunn and Melrose Place star Laura Leighton and others.

Celebrity guests were on-hand alongside domestic violence survivors to unveil a symbolic exhibit honoring those who take a stand against domestic violence. The structure featured facts about domestic violence as well as pre-recorded messages from celebrity guests such as Jennifer Love Hewitt, Martina McBride, Vivica Fox, Robin Givens, Michael Bolton as well as others. The first 100 people to take a stand against domestic violence by walking through the exhibit at the unveiling received a free pair of shoes from Marshalls. The exhibit also travelled to Union Square in New York City for second event on October 8 where Robin Givens and Judge Jeanine Pirro were celebrity guests.

Part of the Shop til It Stops campaign donates $1.00 for each pair of shoes sold (up to $150,000) from October 1 through October 15.

marshallsNational Domestic Violence Hotline (The Hotline) CEO Sheryl Cates was in New York today and made an appearance on New York City’s Fox 5 Morning News Show. Her interview with anchor Mike Woods focused on shedding the light on domestic violence and The Hotline’s recent partnership with Marshall’s for the Shop Till It Stops Campaign. Marshalls is donating $1 to The Hotline for each pair of shoes purchased at any Marshalls store between October 1 and 15, 2009. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and an important time to reach out to the media and bring awareness to the cause.
