Pamela Anderson Donates $60,000 to The Hotline

She is probably best known for her career as an actress, but Pamela Anderson now spends most of her time raising funds for non-profit organizations worldwide. Anderson recently visited the National Domestic Violence Hotline (The Hotline) to make a significant contribution and hear first-hand how advocates are making a difference in the lives of those affected by abuse.

Every day, advocates at The Hotline answer approximately 900 calls, chats and texts from victims, survivors, their friends and family seeking information about domestic violence. With one in four women, one in seven men and one in three teens experiencing physical, emotional or verbal abuse by an intimate partner in their lifetime, the need to provide resources and support for victims is critical. It is why The Pamela Anderson Foundation chose to donate $60,000 to the organization that has been answering calls around the clock since its inception in 1996.

“It was incredibly important for me to meet the men and women who, day in and day out, offer compassion and information to anyone who needs help with domestic violence. I am so happy to know that our donation will help ensure those seeking options will continue to find that trusted resource at The Hotline,” said Pamela Anderson, founder of The Pamela Anderson Foundation.

Anderson presented the check to Katie Ray-Jones, chief executive officer of The Hotline, who thanked the actress, author and philanthropist for her generous gift. “We know that Pamela is incredibly busy raising money to support her foundation, allowing her to donate to causes she believes in such as ours. We couldn’t do this work without supporters like The Pamela Anderson Foundation. We are grateful for people like her who have a place in their heart for the people we serve.”

Happy New Year from The Hotline!

avonHappy New Year! It’s hard to believe we’re already almost halfway through January 2015.

We are so thankful for the many people who donated to The Hotline during our #GingerbreadForGood campaign back in December. Because of the support we received in 2014, we are answering a higher percentage of calls, chats, and texts, but there is still work to do. Our goal is to answer every single contact that reaches out to us. With your help, we can get there!

The Avon Foundation for Women has generously extended their matching grant through the end of February. This means that Avon Foundation will double each gift to The Hotline, and those matching funds will be distributed to a group of local and state hotlines nationwide.

If you were not able to make a gift during December, or if you have more to give, please consider donating to The Hotline and taking advantage of the Avon Foundation’s match through the end of next month. Every gift increases our ability to serve domestic violence victims and survivors. A gift of $20 – or more – means one more call or chat answered and one step closer to safety for someone experiencing abuse. Tips for Donating Safely Online

We care very much about our online community. It was recently brought to our attention that there are sources on the internet who are using our name to solicit donations. While this is very unfortunate, there are limited actions we can take against these scammers or to ensure that others don’t use our name falsely.

In order to protect yourself, here are some tips for safely donating online:

  • Is the site legitimate? Whenever we fundraise online, the URL will start with “https://donate.ncfv” (double-check that you see this in the address bar). Please know that if you do donate with us online that our site is secure and that we will always protect your private information.
  • Our website is thehotline.org, NOT hotline.com, thehotline.com, ndvh.com, etc. Please pay attention to what website you’re visiting.
  • Don’t share overly personal information. While a true donation form for us might ask you for your credit card information (including expiration date and security number), we will NEVER ask for your social security number, date of birth, bank account information or debit pin number.
  • If you make a donation to us, “NDVH-TCFV 512-794-1133” will show up on your credit card statement as proof.
  • If you’re giving money to a company or product claiming to be affiliated with us, feel free to check out their connection to us by contacting our Development/Database Specialist, Michael, at mbartz@ndvh.org.

Don’t fear online donations! Donating online can be quick and convenient. By following these tips, you can give safely and make a difference for victims of abuse. Thank you for your ongoing support of our mission to end domestic violence.

Teacher Donates Cell Phone Penalty to The Hotline

At The Hotline, we are moved by the men and women who support our work in protecting victims of domestic violence. A few weeks ago, we received a special letter containing a donation. It was from a college professor and it came with a generous financial contribution. The professor wished to remain anonymous. The letter read,

“With growing frustration over cell phones ringing in my classroom, I decided to turn the distraction into something more positive. I told my students at the beginning of the semester that each time their cell phone rang in class, they would be asked to donate $5 to your program. I then passed a collection jar at the end of the semester, and this gift was the end result. I hope you can put it good use.”

We circulated the letter through our office and smiled as we read it. It’s such a simple but creative way to make a difference. This model of giving can be replicated by all of us, in finding ways to connect our daily lives to the issues we care deeply about.

Thank you, Professor, for teaching a valuable lesson on charity to your students and us.

Thank you to the Avon Foundation for Women for their recent matching gift of $200,000 as part of GLAMOUR magazine’s TELLNOW Campaign. The gift, along with the text  donations from the campaign, will go towards ensuring calls to The Hotline that previously would have gone unanswered are not able to be answered by a live caring voice. Last year, over 80,000 calls to The Hotline went unanswered due to a lack of funding.

Verizon has also joined in the campaign and during Domestic Violence Awareness Month will encourage their employees to make online and text donations to The Hotline to help ensure that every call is answered.

Because of partners such as GLAMOUR, the Avon Foundation for Women, and Verizon – it is our hope that when a victim of domestic violence reaches out for hope, they receive a live caring voice on the other end of the call who can provide hope and help to lead a life free from violence.

Light Up The Holidays for Families Affected By DV

National Domestic Violence Hotline Light up the HolidaysThis holiday season, join us in lighting up the holidays for those families affected by domestic violence.

The holidays should be a time for family and friends to share the joy and hope of the season. For those experiencing abuse, however, December can also be a particularly stressful time. Domestic violence doesn’t stop for the holidays and the added pressures of holiday expectations can worsen an already unhealthy situation. This year, help those living with abuse to know that they’re never alone, especially during the holidays.

One call to The Hotline brings compassion, courage, and a connection to help. Your donation can give a victim the gift of a new beginning and a brighter New Year.

Join us in creating a community of hope for everyone taking the courageous step to call for help over the holidays.  When our phones light up at The Hotline, we want to ensure a caring voice is available to offer help.  Let’s light up the holidays for callers by giving them the gift of life and hope this holiday season.

The Hotline Gives Thanks

For many Americans, Thanksgiving is a day to spend time with family, giving thanks for loved ones, eating a home-cooked meal and enjoying all that life has to offer. During this holiday, we at The Hotline pause to give thanks and show gratitude for the following:

  • That those affected by domestic violence find the courage and strength to make that first call for help to 1-800-799-SAFE.
  • That elected officials understand the serious situation that domestic violence victims find themselves in and are working to help end domestic violence.
  • For partners and donors’ support and dedication in helping The Hotline be a vital link to safety for thousands of victims each month.
  • For advocates who give selflessly to each caller and are a voice of hope and safety as they journey toward a life free from violence.

Not everyone will have an easy holiday. Some will not be home, but instead seeking safety and refuge at their local family violence shelter. You can make these families’ holidays brighter by reaching out to your local family violence program this season. There are many ways you can help:

  • Volunteer your time at a local family violence program
  • Donate your professional skills (i.e. legal services, administrative, medical, hairstyling, etc.)
  • Organize a food drive or toy drive through your church, club, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, etc.
  • Donate gifts for adults and children. Some programs even provide opportunities for residents to pick and give gifts to their children.
  • Adopt a family at your local program
  • Donate your gently used clothing items. Programs use these items for residents who flee with only the clothes on their backs. Some also have resale shops and accept donations of clothes, toys, books, etc.

Shopping for a Cause during Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and during this time, we encourage people to take a stand against domestic violence and say we will no longer tolerate domestic violence in our communities. In recognizing that it will take all of us to put an end to domestic violence, Celtic-rock band Apsylon is using their talents to bring awareness to the issue and also help support the Hotline and loveisrespect.

Throughout the month of October, Celtic-rock band Apsylon will donate one hundred percent of all digital album download sales to The Hotline and loveisrespect in an effort to help create awareness about domestic violence and teen dating abuse. Their 2010 debut album, “Dreaming of Yesterday” includes a key track, “Lena,” which tells a harrowing tale of domestic abuse and ends with a plea to end the stigma and shame that accompanies domestic violence. Blending elements of classical, Celtic folk, and rock music, Äpsylon’s album “Dreaming Of Yesterday” is available now on the band’s web site at www.apsylon.com.

Verizon Wireless HopeLine Program Provides Support for Victims

verizon wirelessVerizon’s Nokia Shade cell phone has become available online. This is the first phone to have #HOPE pre-programmed in the contact list. Customers who dial #HOPE from the Nokia Shade or from any Verizon Wireless phone are automatically connected to the National Domestic Violence Hotline (The Hotline).

Verizon Wireless has been a long time champion for Domestic Violence prevention. They run a HopeLine program year round which collects no-longer used wireless phones, batteries, and accessories and provides them to victims of domestic violence. According to The Hotline CEO Sheryl Cates, Verizon’s efforts have been a great success.

“Over the past year, the Hotline received more than 1,000 calls through #HOPE, so it’s clear that many victims are relying on wireless technology and #HOPE from Verizon Wireless as a vital safety link for them and their families,” said Sheryl Cates, CEO of the National Domestic Violence Hotline. “We are happy to see Verizon Wireless and Nokia take the next step and pre-program #HOPE into the Nokia Shade device. This quick and easy access to the Hotline and our advocates will make it even easier for victims to find the resources they need for safety and independence.”
